Questions to Ask Yourself When Looking for A Pottery Oven
What Types Of Clay Do You Want To Use?
Different clays mature at different temperatures. As a general rule of thumb, most kilns either fire to a max temperature of 1200°C or 1300°C. Make sure the clay type you are using marry up with the temperatures in your kiln.
Please refer to our kiln firing chart for further information.
What Size Of Pottery Oven Do You Need?
Primarily, the size of the kiln you choose should depend on the types of projects you intend to do, as well as the space you have available for the kiln itself. Firing a full kiln is important to achieve maximum efficiency, so consider not only the size of what you’re firing, but how long it will take you to fill the kiln.
Electricity and Voltage Requirements
Ensure the kiln's electrical requirements match your home or studio setup. You will find the electrical requirements for each kiln in the specification section. You will need an electrician to upgrade your power supply if you choose a kiln over 13 amps / 240 volts.
Price
How much are you willing to pay for a new kiln? Naturally, the bigger the kiln, the more expensive it is. Don't forget to take into account the warranty length and the cost of firing your kiln.
Type of Ceramic Oven
Ultimately, there are two types of kilns - front loading and top loading, which both have their pro and cons.
Top Loading Kilns | Front Loading Kilns | |
Ease Of Use | Bending required to load/unload | Easier to load/unload |
Heat Distribution | Very even distribution but may lose heat faster | Retains heat for longer |
Plug In | Yes | No |
Installation Space | Generally more efficient | More space required |
Portability | Yes - usually on wheels | No - static supports |
Maintenance | Simple to maintain | Simple, but could be more work |
Cost | Generally less expensive to fire | Still efficient, but more expensive vs Top Loaders |
